Bedding & Bathtowels

Update 5/1/14 - Outcome of discussion:  For bedding:  Upon arrival, visitors make beds with clean sheets using their own or sheets from the Hume bag or storage bins. At departure, remove sheets & take them with you to launder but please replace bedspreads for dust protection.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This past year, I have cleaned all the blankets at the cabin and provided 4 new pillows, 2 bedspreads & mattress pads (for new loft beds) & a comforter with a cover (for the bedroom) so I hope you find the bedding comfortable and cozy.  I'd still like a new mattress pad and throw rugs for the bedroom - eventually. But getting up close & personal with the bedding makes me wonder if we should streamline our bed linen protocol.

Ellen has managed the "Hume Bag" containing the bed linens and towels for the cabin for many years.  The bag can get very full and heavy and she must need a special place to store it.  The Chambers clan has never partaken of the joys of that bag since we have always been far out of the loop.  We just take our own sheets, pillows, towels, comforters or sleeping bags, kitchen towels, cleaning rags - whatever we need to stay warm & clean - and we bring them back home.

What do you think of asking cabin users to bring their own bed linens and towels?

Advantages:

Ellen & users don't have to schlepp the bag around

You're guaranteed clean sheets & towels

Less storage would be needed at the cabin (& Ellen's house)

Disadvantages:

You'd have to make the bed when you arrive & unmake it when you leave - same amount of work - just reversed.

You provide your own stuff

I find it very easy to do it this way and it makes a lot of sense to me to take this burden off of Ellen.  What do you think?

I could go either way. I'm fine with storing the bag and have a special shelf where it lives until needed. It also serves as a way to keep track of the keys and get contributions from cabin users when they return it. Personally, I would be fine with bring my own stuff up but would still have to have special sheets since I don't have a standard double bed at home. Either way works for me.

I could go either way too. I would also need to buy a special set for use at the cabin, but worst case scenario, a sleeping bag could work in a pinch! It would also work if we just had a set or two that could rotate through the bag and visitors would be responsible for stripping the bedding they use off the bed, replacing them with clean ones and washing and putting the used ones back in the bag. Is that how it works now?

Thanks for the comments. Yes, Katie, that's how it works now. I'm actually thinking we should put a queen bed in the bedroom (yes, it would fit!) - queen sheets are very easy to come by. I don't really care because Keith & I just use our eastern king size combo in the loft (see inventory under resources tab). But we'd like to have a queen available for guests!
