2014 Summary

2014 was a momentous year for the cabin.  While it is our family's legacy, it is also a local icon.  Its location puts it in the viewscape of Hume Lake residents & visitors to an astounding degree.  People know it - it is significant to the Forest Service and the Hume Lake community.

  •      In February, the cabin was featured in Hume Lake Christian Camp's summer video which brought it local fame & notoriety.  See these links:
    •  - TEASER
    •  - FULL VIDEO - This may make more sense if you know a bit about the apostle Paul & the Book of Acts - the campers studied about Paul before-hand so they got it!
  •      Just before Memorial Day, the hazard trees disappeared in one day, per USFS request. For the full story see:  - HAZARD TREES
  •      In August, the north deck was rebuilt and the cabin received its first real foundation.  See: - NORTH DECK    We think it looks amazing - we really like it without skirting or  half-log fascia but we're certainly open to discussion.
  •      In September, the East gable end was repaired with beautiful shakes hand-split by Lud.  See: - EAST GABLE
  • We also had to replace the upper water valve shared with Lot #3 - WATER VALVE - , we hauled away Lot #3's ancient wood pile, tidied up after all the construction, replaced the shades - SHADES, sealed a huge floor crack and Keith re-wired the refrigerator, both electric heaters and several more outlets.  In the loft he added an outlet and a switch for the light.  We think you'll find all the wiring safer & more user-friendly.
  •      During our October visit, Keith & I were surprised and delighted to have Bonnie & Susanna Douglas and their husbands stop by.  Susanna (now from Idaho, formerly from Alaska) was visiting Bonnie (from Miramonte by Dunlap) and they were out for a drive, saw someone was home and stopped to say "hi" for a few hours.  It was wonderful to get re-acquainted and reminisce about their past cabin visits and Grandma Agnes.  We have more in common than you'd ever guess.  The last time I saw Bonnie was at the cabin in 1977 with Grandma, Ken, Don Longuevan, Jim West, and Alan Zulch.  Bonnie commented in the visitor's log about the "rather full house".

In September of 2011, Keith & I visited the cabin after a 3-year absence.  We were shocked at how derelict it looked.  The porch roof was sliding off, there was a broken window, broken window & door trims, the boatshed was a mess, the roof fascia was falling off and the north deck was rotting off.  Little work had been done to it since Susan & Butch spent a summer (in 1998 or so?) renovating the bathroom, the entry porch and the foundation.  They absolutely rescued the cabin from oblivion but I realize now that their efforts weren't appreciated or valued nearly enough by the rest of the cabin owners, including me.  During our Memorial Day weekend visit in 2012, Keith & I got snowed in for a day and had the time to re-think our commitment to the cabin. Since then we have spent nearly all of our vacation-time addressing long-standing repair issues and striving to make the cabin more user-friendly as well as easy, safe and pleasant to use.  We have attempted to renovate, repair, preserve, clean,  tidy and idiot-proof everything possible without sacrificing any of the cabin's intrinsic charm and authenticity.  Our challenge to you is to understand and critique what we've done - your comments and suggestions for further improvements are always welcome.  We hope you take the time to visit the cabin and recognize what a treasure we have!  Carol
