A huge THANK YOU to Lud for hand-splitting the shakes and to Barbara, too, who helped him find the shake bolts. We couldn't and wouldn't have done this project without the right shakes!
Update 9/18 - Email from Duane: Yes I'm pretty sure were done for now. The shingles worked fine. Since they were not tapered there was little waste. When a angle cut was made the resulting leftover could be used also. There is about 30 to 40 unused shingles. There were some mice and/or squirrel nests and an old wasp hive but no damage to the cabin. We cleaned it all up, insulated and installed 3/8 plywood sheathing. We did not treat the shingles with penofin. There's only about 1/2 cup of redwood penofin left. I put the hinges on the access door under the deck but not a hasp.
Update 9/15 - Without any fanfare or comment, Duane sent the last 2 photos (above) on Monday, 9/15. Seems to be all done! I'll fill in more details when I get them...
Update 9/11 late pm - Check out the nesting material! Ewwww! Duane said there was a big, old wasp nest in there, too. He stripped the shakes and moved the insulators to the
fascia today (also did deck details). The gable area looks about as expected and shows no rot but is probably rather smelly. I'll be very happy to get rid of that crud.
And some flashing & waterproofing will be very useful!
Update 9/11 - PG&E is still refusing to change our service drop so we'll continue with the 3-wire open service - very vintage anyway. Can't wait to see what's behind the shakes!
Update 9/10/14 - I realize we're on our own for the gable project since the other cabin owners objected so much. Keith & I feel this project is extremely important, we've already committed to it and Lud already provided the shakes - so we will keep on keeping on. - Carol
Update August 19 - We picked up the shakes hand-split by Lud. They are beautiful! We'll take them to Hume over Labor Day and Duane will fit in the East Gable project during Sept or Oct.
Update 5/6/2014 - Lud called this am to say he has already split the shakes for the gable. Awesome!!!!
Last week, Keith peeked into the gable area through an electrical box and didn't see any building paper or sheathing. We think rodents may have chewed up the paper - there's a lot of old nesting material between the top log & the old shakes. The lack of sheathing, flashing & building paper likely resulted in the leaks down the bedroom wall. FS fully approves this project.

I talked to Lud about the shakes on the gables. He said he could hand split redwood shakes as needed. He would like to know how much length is "to the weather", the thickness of each and the overall length of the longest of them and about how many are needed. So, next person up could take some measurements and maybe take some more up close pictures.
