The Electrical Saga

2020 - Nearly the entire cabin has all new, upgraded, grounded circuits.  Nearly every appliance has a new cord.  You'd have to try really hard to trip a circuit now - but please don't!  The cabin now has sounder electrical than most of our homes - please enjoy responsibly!

2017-18 - The entire tract went through a huge power upgrade.  PG&E replaced all tree-hung primary & some secondary feeds with poles.  Our cabin has new poles & another new power drop.  It's not as pretty and quaint and rustic as before but is quite a bit safer.

5/29/17 - Wonder of all wonders!  Our cabin electrical update is complete!  We really lucked out when Keith chatted up a PG&E crew & they agreed to replace our bare, sad, saggy 3-wire power drop during our Memorial Day 2017 visit.  To top it off, Keith finished wiring circuits 2 & 7 during this visit, too.  Wires are shielded and outlets are all grounded and up to code.  Our wiring is thoroughly refreshed and safe, good for another 80 years!

We salvaged some beautiful VG DF T&G from under the cabin & decided to floor the gap in the North side of loft floor. This necessitated rewiring the kitchen to keep from burying the junction (top wire of top left pic). Lo & behold, the wires to the outlet by the cooler were in dire need of replacement (middle & bottom wires of top left pic). Rodents???

Thanks to the sobering pic at left, Keith is rewiring circuits & replacing outlets to eliminate the taped junctions, “legalize” & rat-proof exposed wiring and provide grounding.  We are re-using the lovely original, vintage cover plates.  He has rewired the kitchen circuits and split heavily used circuit 6 into three to avoid over-loading.  He will add 2 more outlets to the bedroom and rewire the three living room outlets.  Exposed wiring is metal clad grounded 12/2 (3/8” d) & 12/3.  The metal clad is slightly industrial looking which we think still fits with the cabin's simple, functional charm while adding an element of modernized safety.  It will look virtually the same as ever but we believe it will be much safer.

Keith has already rewired the vintage refrigerator and heaters (2), which all work beautifully now.  The toaster is getting a new plug but the cord & switch are still perfect and it works great.  We hope to restore the waffle iron which must have shorted amazingly some time ago!

This all would have been finished by now - 9/4/15 - if we hadn't had the distractions of the kitchen sink sump failure or the Rough Fire.  Soon, we hope...
