Kitchen Door

June 2023 - The new kitchen door is finally installed!!!  So many fits & starts on this simple little project. We try to conform to USFS regs but this project tested our commitment to such!!!  Oh well, it is done now.  It's solid, quiet and looks great - few would notice its differences from the old one.

Update April 2022 - we have ordered a window - expected mid-July - and should be able to install the door this year.  It will offer a bit more bear resistance, I think!

The kitchen door takes a beating due to its eastern exposure and this old door (from early 1970s?) has finally reached the end of its useful life.  USFS says we must replace with a wood door but it was nearly impossible to find a 2'4" exterior door and California no longer allows doors with venting windows.  So we ended up with a nice Rogue Valley DF 1 3/4" special order without glass, supposedly at wholesale.  Now we need to find a window & lockset.  We're looking for a bronze aluminum dual-pane single-hung window, probably custom size.  We will install.  We want to find a black or bronze high-quality, simple, vintage-look keyed entry lock.  We'd love your ideas & comments.

Ellen - I love your idea of a keypad! However, we should try to keep the cabin vintage-looking. Also, the kitchen door gets so much weather that it might affect the lock. And we like the rustic-ness of the front door as is.
    Hmm...

The DF door plan sounds good to me. Too bad we can't use something more weather resistant like steel or fiberglass but fir is probably the next best alternative. I like the idea of a black or bronze lockset. One thing I have at home that I really like is an entry lock with a keypad so we don't have to take a key with us when we're out on foot. That seems like it might be really handy at the cabin where people are outside a lot.

Any luck on finding a window and lock?
