Septic Repair

Finished October 19, 2017.  Yay!  No more backups!  Keith & Carol did have to "doll up" the excavation to help it blend in & protect it from erosion.  It's a 750 gal, 2 chamber tank - the smallest permit-able possible!

During Construction

Proposal

The septic system was last repaired in 1985.  At that time, Ken, Steve & Janet installed a new small, hand-dug redwood tank with a 20' leach line heading down the hill.  It worked fairly well for many years, at least after Butch installed a vent pipe for the bathroom in 1997.  For the past decade, however, we believe roots have invaded both tank & leach line and we have a less than optimum flush-ability rating.  Copious applications of root killer & minimal bathroom water use have kept the system somewhat in check.  In fact, now that there is visible out-flow (see pics), the toilet flushes fairly reliably.

The time has arrived to deal with the septic problem.  For $4,500, Duane has offered to install:

  • 500 gallon poly tank
  • 50 foot Infiltrator leach line below root-line
  • with USFS approval
  • no county permit (bc a repair)
  • to be accomplished after Labor Day this year.

Keith would like to spec a 750-1000 gallon tank with the same leach line, in order to handle the "surge" that 6-8 adults in a weekend might cause - even though the cost would be higher.  FYI, the Infiltrator system is a newer technology.  Lots 1 & 30 have had standard systems installed (by Steve Mason) in the last few years for about $12,000 each.

Please let us know your thoughts!  This is an urgent issue and we have a chance to deal with it NOW - before Jennifer White retires & while Duane still gives us priority!
