Cabin Instructions - Summer 2024

 Before visiting the cabin:

  • Check Calendar on website, if open request your dates on the form above the calendar; your request must be confirmed by Ellen or Carol
  • Check with Keith & Carol before making any repairs or improvements.
  • Pick up keys, linen and supplies for the cabin from Ellen & turn in releases.

At the Cabin

Access

  • Entry door – remove padlock
  • Unlock dead bolt and set latch to unlocked position with button on back of deadbolt
  • Hang padlock on hook just inside the entry door
  • 3204 key works for new electrical panel, crawl space access door under North deck, boathouse and boat lock.  Combo for water heater access door & lock box is 3204.  Lockbox is inside water heater door to the right & up - look over your right shoulder.
  • Note that entry, bathroom & north deck doors all have self-locking deadbolts.  Be very careful not to lock yourself out.  You CANNOT break in.  Use lockbox only if necessary.

Water

  • Confirm all outside faucets are closed (off) – one right of entry porch, one under electrical panel and one under kitchen window.  Confirm all inside faucets are closed.
  • Confirm water heater drain valve is closed (see diagram below)
  • Open both ball valves:  one at top of old driveway, one at the cedar tree 40' up driveway, marked by stakes & blue paint.  The upper valve is shared with cabin #3.  Always listen and look for leaks.  Air in the lines may spit a bit.
  • VERY IMPORTANT:  *Purge any air in water heater tank (to be sure it's full) by running hot water faucet in kitchen until water flows continuously with NO air burbling.

Power

  • At electrical panel under bedroom window, using 3204 key, unlock & remove padlock, pull door locking tab towards you, & allow door to drop down & swing open.
  • Turn all breakers to ON position (Main is already on)
  • Close electrical panel door – note the top of door needs to slide under the rim of the box.
  • After confirming that water heater is full (*see 4th water step above), move lever at switch box directly above water heater to ON position (see diagram below).

During your visit

  • Change in policy – you'll make the beds upon arrival, for your own use, rather than upon departure.
  • Make a list of all items that need to be restocked, replaced or repaired
  • The cabin is old and deserves respect - Please treat it gently. Be especially careful with:
    • the shades - you may need to push curtains aside as you close the shades
    • the kitchen sink faucet - turn on slowly or it will splash everywhere & don't crank it closed too hard or you'll mash the washers
    • vintage mixing bowls & tableware – not microwave or oven safe
    • kitchen sink drains to a SUMP - any wastewater must not attract vermin!
  • Follow Forest Service and cabin owners' association regulations, including:
    • Mechanized off-highway vehicles are allowed on established roads only; no dirt bikes or ATVs or mountain bikes are allowed off-road, no dirt bikes or ATVs on paved roads – Check USFS website for OHV approved roads
    • Follow all fire safety precautions – Check with USFS in Dunlap for current fire conditions.
    • Be respectful of our neighbors

When leaving the cabin

The basic rule is LEAVE NO TRACE!  Leave it at least as clean as you found it, don't leave or take anything – if you break something, please tell Ellen or Carol

  • Remove all food that you brought
  • Defrost and wipe down refrigerator, leave door open to prevent mold – see Cabin Manual
  • Clean the cabin before you leave
    • vacuum or sweep floors, including bathroom and loft (if you used it)
    • shake out throw rugs & replace
    • don't forget to clean table, kitchen sink, stovetop, oven, microwave, counters, bathroom, etc
  • Remove any bedding you used and replace the bedspreads on beds
  • Take home & launder all towels and sheets you used.  DO NOT remove curtains, pillow shams, or bedspreads (unless you have an accident) – Carol prefers to launder them
  • Lock all windows and lower the shades
  • Put boats, tools, etc. away in shed and lock shed door
  • Make an entry in the guest book
  • Turn off water heater switch above water heater, lock door
  • At electrical panel, turn off all  breakers except Main breaker.  Lock panel door.
  • Turn off water at both main valves up the driveway or coordinate with Lot 3 about upper main if they are visiting.  Leave all faucets & WH drain valve closed (don’t drain) during summer season.
  • Double check the cabin, shed and yard for anything left out or left open
  • Lock all doors with deadbolts and/or padlocks, as you found them

 After your visit:

  • Return the keys, clean laundry and replace/restock/repair list to Ellen
  • To help cover cabin costs, please include a check for your user fee, payable to Ellen M. Rinde – Hume Cabin Account.
    • i) $10 per person per night for McCrary family groups
    • ii) $50 per visit plus $15 per person per night for other groups
  • Make maintenance recommendations to Carol or Ken

Switch----->

DO NOT switch on new switch above water heater until you have purged any air in tank by running hot water faucet in kitchen until water flows smoothly and continuously.

Before switching on, check that water heater drain valve at bottom is closed - ball valve lever should be perpendicular to flow of water.  If not, close it & PURGE(see above) before switching Water Heater on.  You do not need to open it when you leave unless you are winterizing.                            Valve at bottom ----->
